I just downloaded eClean, but nothing has happened. What do I do now?

The short answer is that you need to install eClean. eClean is distributed in an archive file. That is, two files are compressed into one file named eclean.zip. One file (Readme.txt) gives you some basic information about eClean and how to install it. The other file (Setup.exe) is the installation program. You must run this program to install and configure eClean for use.

I just registered eClean, but it's not on my machine... when do I get it?

eClean is distributed as shareware. The shareware concept allows you to download, install and use the software prior to paying for it. If you like the program and continue to use it, you should send the author the registration fee. The shareware concept is unfamiliar to some people and you may have thought you needed to register the software prior to installing it.

If you have already registered eClean, but have not installed it on your machine, all you need to do is download it and install it! If you are unfamiliar with downloading and installing Windows based software, you can get some pointers by reading other questions and answers in this FAQ page.

I know that I have downloaded eClean onto my local PC, but I can’t seem to find it. How can I find the downloaded file?

The file that you download from this site is named eclean.zip. To find that file, follow these simple steps:

1.) From the "Start" menu, select Find -> Files or Folders...
2.) Type "eclean.zip" in the part of the window entitled "Named:"
3.) From the field entitled "Look In:", select "My Computer"
4.) Click the "Find Now" button.

Windows will begin searching your entire computer for eclean.zip. If it is found, Windows will display its location in the bottom list area of the find window. If it (eclean.zip) does not appear in the list area of the window, Windows could not find it and you will need to download it again.

When I try to open eclean.zip, I get the Window entitled "Open With". Why am I getting this window?

This means that you do not have an archive program like WinZip installed your PC. If you get this window, you should click the "Cancel" button and download an archive utility. WinZip is a shareware archive program (which I did not write) that can be downloaded from www.winzip.com. Once installed, WinZip will associate itself with files ending with a .zip extension. That is, after installing WinZip, you will not get the "Open With" window when trying to open eclean.zip. Even if you mistakenly associated another program with files ending with a .zip extension, installing WinZip will correct that association problem.

Do I have to register eClean before downloading or using it?

No! eClean is distributed as shareware. The shareware concept allows you to download, install and use the software prior to paying for it. If you like the program and continue to use it, you should send the author the registration fee. eClean is very reasonably priced at $10.00.

eClean is fully functional during and after the evaluation period. Once the evaluation period has expired, eClean will remind you that you should register the program by displaying the registration window prior to exiting the program.

eClean does not start when double-click on the file named eclean.zip. Why?

eclean.zip is an archive file. An archive file reduces the file size for transmission of files and programs over the Internet. You need to expand the files contained inside eclean.zip and run the program entitled Setup.exe to install and configure eClean before you can use it.

To expand archive files (files ending with the .zip extension) you will need an archive utility such as WinZip. WinZip is a shareware archive program (which I did not write) that can be downloaded from www.winzip.com. Once installed, WinZip will associate itself with files ending with a .zip extension. That is, after installing WinZip, you can open eclean.zip and extract the files contained inside. Once extracted, you will need to run the program named Setup.exe to actually install and configure eClean.

How do I install eClean?

The most confusing part of installing eClean is extracting and running the setup.exe program file.

eClean is distributed in a file named eclean.zip. eclean.zip is an archive file. An archive file reduces the file size for transmission of files and programs over the Internet.

There are actually two files inside eclean.zip. They are:

Readme.txt
Setup.exe

To extract setup.exe from eclean.zip, you simply need to install an archive utility like WinZip. WinZip is a shareware archive program (which I did not write) that can be downloaded from www.winzip.com. Once installed, WinZip will associate itself with files ending with a .zip extension.

After installing WinZip or any other archive utility, you can install eClean by following these simple steps:

1.) Double-click eclean.zip from Windows Explorer. By doing this, you have only opened the archive file, you have not installed eClean yet.
2.) To run eClean’s installation program, simply double-click the file entitled Setup.exe from within your archive program's window.
3.) Follow the installation instructions on the screen.

If all goes well, you will see the eClean icon flashing in the system tray when setup is finished. To begin using eClean, double-click the flashing envelope icon in the system tray.

I have installed eClean but do not see any trace of it in AOL or my e-mail program. Why?

eClean 2000 version 3.0 integrates with Microsoft Outlook. To support other email programs, eClean was also designed to run as a stand alone application. It behaves similar to a word processor in that you need to open a text file or paste text into eClean's main window to use eClean's features.

To learn more about using eClean, read the help file’s tutorial. This was designed to get you started using eClean’s functionality. To access the tutorial, open eClean’s main window, by double-clicking on the icon in the system tray. Select "Help Topics..." from the "Help" menu. Navigate the section entitled tutorial.

I have entered my registration information in the about box, but it says that it is incorrect. What did I do wrong?

The registration number you where sent works in conjunction with your name. That is, you must type both your name and registration number in eClean’s About Box exactly as they appear in your registration confirmation e-mail.

To ensure that this information is entered exactly as it appears in the confirmation e-mail, do the following:

1.) Open the e-mail confirmation containing the registration text.
2.) Using your mouse, click and hold the left mouse button down over the first letter in the name shown in the e-mail.
3.) While continuing to hold the left mouse button down, carefully drag the mouse over your entire name until you reach (and include) the last letter in your last name. This is called selecting text. Your entire name should be hilited in black now.
4.) While your name is hilited, press and hold the "Ctrl" key down on your keyboard while you press the "C" key at the same time. This is called copying text.
5.) Open the eClean about box by selecting "About eClean 2000..." from the "Help" menu.
6.) Click the mouse button in the box by the word "Name:"
7.) Press and hold the "Ctrl" key while you press the "V" key at the same time, this is called pasting. If everything worked okay, your full name should now be in the Name box.
8.) Repeat the same steps for the registration number accept you will paste the text into the box next to the words "Registration Number:"
9.) Once you have pasted the registration number in the appropriate box, click the Close button.

If everything worked as expected, you should see a message box saying "Thank you for registering eClean!"

How do I shut down Outlook during the installation?

The eClean installation program requires that Microsoft Outlook and all email items are closed for a proper installation. Many people are unaware that even though you close the main application, Outlook is still running if there are any open email messages. To fully exit Outlook, you must close the program and any open email messages. The screen shot below demonstrates how to close Outlook and all open mail items.
